Background of the study

Nigerian academic writing has evolved alongside global educational reforms, yet it retains distinctive syntactic features shaped by local linguistic traditions. This study investigates the syntactic complexity in Nigerian university publications by comparing academic texts from various institutions. Syntactic complexity, including sentence length, clause embedding, and the use of advanced grammatical structures, is a crucial indicator of academic writing proficiency (Adebayo, 2023). The research examines how Nigerian scholars negotiate between indigenous linguistic influences and Western academic conventions in their writing. Through a comparative analysis of research articles, theses, and conference papers, the study identifies patterns that contribute to the overall complexity and clarity of academic discourse (Obi, 2024). Additionally, the research explores the relationship between syntactic complexity and academic performance, considering factors such as curriculum design and language instruction. By integrating quantitative and qualitative methods, the study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of syntactic features in Nigerian academic writing, thereby offering insights for curriculum developers and language instructors (Chukwu, 2025).

Statement of the problem

Despite the importance of syntactic complexity in academic writing, there is limited research on how Nigerian scholars balance indigenous linguistic traits with international academic standards. The current literature provides little insight into the specific syntactic challenges faced by Nigerian academics, resulting in a gap in strategies to enhance clarity and rigor in academic publications (Adebayo, 2023). This deficiency not only affects the overall quality of academic writing but also hinders the global competitiveness of Nigerian research. Addressing these challenges is essential for improving academic communication and fostering a more effective educational system. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the syntactic structures in university publications and identifying areas for improvement (Obi, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

1. To analyze the syntactic complexity in Nigerian academic texts.

2. To compare syntactic features across different university publications.

3. To recommend strategies for enhancing academic writing quality.

Research questions:

1. What are the prevalent syntactic features in Nigerian academic writing?

2. How does syntactic complexity vary among university publications?

3. What interventions can improve syntactic clarity and coherence in academic texts?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it offers a comparative analysis of syntactic complexity in Nigerian academic writing, providing insights that can enhance educational practices and research quality. The findings will support curriculum development and academic training, ensuring that Nigerian scholars can effectively communicate complex ideas in international contexts (Chukwu, 2025).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study focuses exclusively on syntactic complexity in academic publications from Nigerian universities. It does not include non-academic texts or publications from non-university sources.

Definitions of terms:

1. Syntactic Complexity: The degree of sophistication in sentence structure and grammar.

2. Academic Writing: Formal written communication used in scholarly contexts.

3. University Publications: Research articles, theses, and papers produced by academic institutions.
